Black is Beautiful
Black is Beautiful was written for all the young Black girls throughout the world who have been told or have felt that they are not "beautiful." After witnessing Aryonne Cotton tell her mother, "I am ugly," the author felt compelled to dispel this harmful idea. Black girls grow up watching movies, television, and reading books that predominantly feature White females as the epitome of society's ideal standard of beauty. They are exposed to these images daily, reinforcing a narrow and exclusionary perception of what it means to be beautiful. This systematic indoctrination can inflict lifelong pain and feelings of inferiority. Unwilling to stand by as the world diminished the self-worth of Black girls, the author sought to celebrate their beauty. From the elegance of the Queen of Sheba to the grace and intelligence of former First Lady Michelle Obama, and countless remarkable women in between, this book was created to help Black girls recognize and embrace their own beauty.
